Concrete House
Single Family Home
Gdynia, Poland
The conversation between the two volumes that make up the house reflects the programmatic, internal split of the home. The smaller volume facing the street is where the primarily communal functions and entertaining takes place. The larger volume further away from the street is where the family rooms and bedrooms are located. The two are joined by a low, fully glazed entry. Windows are precisely cut into the volumes to capture maximum amount of light, particularly during the short winter months. The bedroom windows are designed as sitting nooks or double as workspaces with built-in desks. The windows also dramatically illuminate and thereby define the rough concrete volumes, in some cases soaring two stories high and in others just big enough to crawl into and start on a good book. The roughness of the fully exposed concrete volumes is juxtaposed with the highly finished, minimally detailed inserts such as a cantilevered stair, millwork pieces or wood wall panels.
